Sierra County Youth and Education Council to initiate community-wide trainings for youth and adults

Truth or Consequences, NM January 28, 2007:  The Sierra County Youth and Education Council (SCYEC) will convene a series of community-wide workshops in Truth or Consequences that promotes collaboration and partnerships in an effort to support area youth.  Several national youth development organizations will conduct the workshops at local venues.  These workshops are open to all members of the community and may be useful to other community-based organizations, agencies, and interested individuals.  Other Turner Foundation grantees from around the state will also be invited to participate.

 

The first event features Michael Brown of Okra Knowledge-Based Solutions, from Los Angeles, CA.  The workshop will focus on how issues of youth culture and the challenges of dealing with diversity in the youth development field.  This workshop sets the stage for a collaborative and comprehensive youth-adult partnership by first engaging adults in deep dialogue around the values that shape the various sub-cultures our youth represent, while highlighting the socio-political implications of youth behavior.  The workshop will be directed at an adult audience, yet will be informative and engaging for youth and young adults as well. 

The workshop will be held on correction:  February 24th, from 9 am to 3 pm at the T or C training center across 3rd from the library.  Advertisements indicating location site and registration deadlines will be published in local newspapers in the coming weeks. 

 

Mr. Brown will also provide additional training to the SCYEC and its constituents on development and implementation of collaborative community development partnerships.

 

Mr. Brown has over 20 years of experience in the for-profit and non-profit sectors that include: system engineering and analysis, technology planning and implementation, community economic & small business development, quality systems management, training and facilitation, curriculum development, corporate and community-based participatory strategic planning, and out of school academic improvement initiatives in support of Positive Youth Development.

 

His expertise includes enhancing effective communication, and establishing of environments that support, respect, and appreciate difference. Michael has supported institutions that include NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Pasadena branch of the Los Angeles Urban League, the Jacobs Family Foundation (Program Director for economic development), the San Diego Diamond Business Improvement District, AlliedSignal Technical Services Corporation, The Non Traditional Leadership Institute, and the New Mexico Forum for Youth and Community.  Michael has served on the Board of Directors for the Pasadena California Chamber of Commerce and San Gabriel Valley Economic Development Corporation. He is a strong advocate for multicultural leadership development and is known for his energetic, insightful, and passionate approach to training and education.  Mr. Brown recently conducted a comprehensive workshop on youth violence for the Albuquerque Public Schools District that garnered positive reviews from community partners and media attention.

 

Future workshops to be held in March and April of this year include Charley Nelson of the Josten’s Educational Services (Minneapolis, MN) and Rick Phillips of Community Matters (Santa Rosa, CA).  The “Community Matters” workshop is a comprehensive two day training directed primarily at youth and adults who make up the SCYEC.
