1st Meeting

During our inaugural meeting on Jan 17, 2007, we elected officers, set meeting dates, planned some workshops, and traded news.

 

First, the news:

 

CASA (represented by Madelyn Klatt): CASA is collecting 'Cartridges for Kids' as a fundraiser.  Please save cell phones and ink cartridges.  Call 894-5947 for pick up of used cartridges

 

Youth & Family Community Center (represented by Scott Weaver): Has extended hours:  W/Th 3-9, F 3-10 and Sat 6-10

 

 

Sierra County Home-school Association (represented by Kim Audette):

    1. Mario Macaroni is working with youth who are interested in aviation.  See http://www.marioshanger.com for more information
    2. The Sierra County Home-school Association is in the process of planning a Science Fair
    3. 2 medicine wheel events took place in January--the idea came from a Forum for Youth workshop.

 

4-H (represented by J. Lamb): There are 5, 4-H clubs in the county serving 120 kids ages 5-19.  4-H offers over 200 project opportunities.

 

Manzano (represented by Rebecca Dow):

1. Appletree has free childcare available for ages 0-5.

2. Manzano classes are available to home-schoolers

3. Standardized testing is available for home-schoolers

 

Vista (represented by Stephanie Montoya): The Forum for Youth is offering a Positive Youth Development training for CASA volunteers

 

T or C Schools (represented by Ron Williams): High School accreditation visit is imminent

 

The workshops that we planned are for the entire community and will be held in Sierra County.  Please mark your calendars, it is very important that home-schoolers make their presence felt.  Youth and adults will enjoy these workshops.  They are as follows:

 

A. OKRA: February 24th 9am-12 and 1-3pm (council meeting from 3-4pm)

B. Josten’s Renaissance Training: March 19th, 3-6pm (council meeting 2-3pm)

Place: TBD

 

C. Community Matters: April 13th and 14th 9-5 (a Statewide conference to be held here in T or C)
