The SCHA Mentoring Program
There is one adult representative and one youth representative of the same gender. The current plan of action is to develop leadership skills in the youth by mentoring. The youth selects a community service project from a list or creates one. Then the youth selects a mentor or one is assigned.
- The mentoring relationship is task-specific and temporary, the mentor and mentee will set a time for mentoring, to provide boundaries.
- Mentor and mentee will contact each other in person, by phone or by email, to total 1 hour or more of time per week.
- Mentors and mentees will answer each other's messages within 48 hours.
- Mentors and mentees will evaluate each other every 3-4 months and turn in copies to the Director of SCHA.
- Mentors & mentees document their mentoring activities in a journal and by photos (2 per hour).
- Mentor and mentee will submit a short written summary of the mentoring sessions to the Director of SCHA before the 2nd Wednesday of every month, including a minimum of 8 photos (2 per hour). Examples are below.
Additionally, the mentor and mentee will:
§ Learn about the philosophies and programs that define SCHA, by reading over the website, reading emails from the Director of SCHA and responding to emails from the Director of SCHA.§ Support SCHA by attending SCHA-sponsored activities.
§ Send one progress report each per month to the Director of SCHA, by 9 am on the third (3rd) Wednesday of the month.
§ Report (either in the monthly progress report or a more timely email) the home-school community's responses to emerging issues back to SCHA
§ Contact others as requested to inform them about SCHA. Eg: Inform home-schooling community members about programs as presented on the website.
§ Record observations during travel. That is to say, make photo/video/taped recordings of relevant observations of any conference or training session whenever possible, and take notes in a journal. Please deliver to SCHA within 24 hours before the next regular meeting, or noon of the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
§ Select or create one committee of interest, then contribute time, and document the contributions with a short summary and 2 photos per hour of time. Send it to SCHA every month as a part of the monthly progress report. An annual recognition program is set up to thank council members who have held the position. In recognition of service, participating youth are nominated for relevant awards. As the organizations change, the representative roles will also change. Following discussion, changes will be announced in writing, and take immediate effect.
